Can Spider-Man Dethrone His Marvel Mates The Avengers?

Only a couple days ago, people from around the United States celebrated America’s 236th birthday with everything red, white, and blue. There were fireworks, miniature flags, pinwheels... and, of course, your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.

On Wednesday, The Amazing Spider-Man raked in a staggering $23.4 million, which made it the second-highest grossing film on July 4th, coming right behind Transformers, which premiered in 2007. In comparison, 2004's Spider-Man 2 only grossed $22 million on America’s birthday. Now, what makes the reboot different from the original, you may ask? One answer to that is: the talent.

Instead of a story revolving around the love between Peter Parker and Mary Jane, this film focuses on the chemistry between Peter Parker (played by Andrew Garfield) and Gwen Stacey (played by Emma Stone). While Stone brings a girl-next-door vibe to the screen, Garfield is able to balance the duality between a superhero and the nerd in the back of the classroom. These two actors bring a genuine love story (it also doesn’t hurt that they are dating in real life), packed with thrill-seeking action and suspense.

The web-slinging movie is on track to earn around $140 million by the end of the weekend. The original Spider-Man currently holds the position of the fourth highest-grossing superhero film of all time; Is there any way that the youthful Spidey can overcome its predecessor? Does it stand any chance of taking down The Avengers? Our Spidey senses tell us... perhaps!
