There has been an increasing push in various communities throughout the United States and abroad to make a difference in the world. As a result of this movement, vast amounts of organizations dedicated to the environment, peace, humanity and animal rights have been popping up all over the place. One such organization is the Re:volve Apparel Project, which was born out of the desire to create a better future for kids everywhere. In order to accomplish that goal, the Re:volve brand sells clothes and accessories, such as tote bags, stickers and pins, that carry various messages about the environment, political beliefs, etc. with the proceeds going towards organizations that are working hard to build a better world for everyone. Re:volve clothing is the future of eco apparel and can be found in Fred Segal stores or online at www.revolvebrand.com. Through buying and wearing Re:volve clothing, you can simultaneously make a statement and support two worthwhile organizations that the Re:volve brand believes in, The Peace Alliance and The Waterkeeper Alliance. The Peace Alliance is an organization, established in 2004, that empowers people to get proactive and create a culture of peace. Ordinary citizens and political individuals often talk about building peace, but this organization is taking action to set the talk into motion. It is trying to achieve its goals through public education, outreach and citizen lobbying efforts, with the main focus being a campaign to create a cabinet-level U.S. Department of Peace. The Peace Alliance is not affiliated with any political parties, but rather builds its foundation on the belief that the ever-increasing levels of violence and the consequential human and economic costs make the issue a critical one to both national and human security. The organization relies on thousands of volunteers from all walks of life and political affiliations to keep pushing its peacekeeping initiative through educating and behaving as a prime example of what it means to live a tranquil, fulfilling life. A department on the government level that is dedicated solely toward violence prevention on all levels can greatly help out the nation. The Peace Alliance is always in need of volunteers who can work with members of Congress, write editorials, do local media interviews, organize local training, and meet with abuse shelters, prison officials, police and fire chiefs, etc. in order to get the word out there about the initiative for a Department of Peace. To find out more about the organization and how you can help in your community, check out www.thepeacealliance.org. Much like The Peace Alliance, The Waterkeeper Alliance is working to empower communities to take action towards a better world, only with the focus being environmental instead of behavioral. The Waterkeeper Alliance is an international center that consists of a network of Waterkeeper programs. Waterkeeper programs are made up of local communities that are vigilant about making sure our waters stay clean and they often have names, like Riverkeeper, Lakekeeper and Baykeeper, which coincide with the bodies of water they protect. The Alliance approves new programs, licenses the use of various program names, represents the individual Waterkeepers on issues of national interest and serves as a place for other Waterkeepers to share their strategy and information on how to keep our waters clean. The Alliance has a three part goal: to support and empower members of local Waterkeeper programs to protect communities, ecosystems and water quality, to promote their model for water protection worldwide and to advocate for issues common to Waterkeeper programs. Being a Waterkeeper requires you to be an investigator, scientist, lawyer and an advocate for the environment. Sometimes Waterkeepers are required to patrol their respective bodies of water in order to make sure that nobody is disrespecting it, and at other times a Waterkeeper needs to be aware of misuse of a program name. For example, a land speculator in the Upper Delaware River tried to take the Riverkeeper name in order to defeat water quality regulations that he was required to carry out. Through the investigative work and legal research of a Waterkeeper, the good name of Riverkeeper was retained by the Alliance and the land speculator was thwarted from creating an unsafe water environment that would have affected the community and wildlife of the Upper Delaware River. If you would like to find out more about the Waterkeeper program, check out www.waterkeeper.org. Protecting our communities and environment is vital and essential to creating a better quality of life for us and future generations to come. Caring enough to get involved is the first step. Who knows what can be achieved when thousands of voices get together to be heard and take action!
