"Boy Meets World" Meets Disney Sequel Series!

Omigosh you guys! A sequel to the ABC series “Boy Meets World” is in the works!!! I AM FREAKING OUT!!!

And that is probably how I would totally react if I actually watched that show. It’s true, I was never a part of the "Cult of TGIF" back in the day; I was too busy watching hockey games and “Frasier”. So, yes, I missed out on this ‘90s staple that the X and Y Generations recall so fondly. But because I AM aware of just how beloved ABC’s Friday night line-up was with my peers, I can at least sympathize with the many wagging tails at this news!

Here’s what I CAN tell you about the show: “Boy Meets World” ran 7 seasons between 1993 and 2000 and chronicled the average life of a kid named Cory Matthews, whom we (okay, you) watched go from an awkward 6th grader to a grown man who ends up getting married to his childhood sweetheart, Topanga (aww). Cory was played by Ben Savage, Fred Savage’s brother, so you could say this was his version of “The Wonder Years” (which ended, after 6 seasons, the same year that “BMW” began)… It’s a rarity for these “coming-of-age” shows to last so long, at least within the time frame that this one did, where we literally get to see these kids grow up on screen. The show was a hit both with kids who were roughly the same age as the characters (such as myself) -- who could not only relate to the issues and themes presented but could actually go through them simultaneously – but also with the slightly younger kids, who could look up to the characters as role models and prepare themselves for what was soon to come.

And as with every TV show that has ever existed, we always wonder what has become of these beloved characters. 12 years after “Boy Meets World” took its final bow, it looks like fans will get an answer!

Reboots are, obviously, not uncommon nowadays, and follow-ups are not far behind (“90210”, “Dallas”, etc.). The Disney Channel is currently developing a new spin on the “Boy Meets World” universe for a new generation of kids. Reportedly, the show (entitled “Girl Meets World”) will shift focus to Cory and Topanga’s teenage daughter, Riley. And, in an ironic twist, we will find that character of Cory is now – GASP! – a junior high History teacher!! (Apparently, this is big news because a teacher/principal named Mr. Feeny was a central character in the original show. I don’t know.)

The only question mark remaining is whether or not the original cast members will be returning to their old roles. Frankly, I can’t see a point in even moving forward with the series if they DON’T return. Both Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel (Topanga) are alive and well and, presumably, available, so what’s the problem? They would only be supporting characters anyway – Let’s lock this in, people!

Auditions are taking place this month for the roles of Riley and her pals, and the pilot is scheduled to be shot in February of next year. Insert clever catchphrase from original series to tie everything together here!!
