It’s no secret -- we are all now officially head-over-heels in love with boy bands. This pop culture craze first started in the mid/late-‘90s and is now making a much needed and hugely successful second round in the music world. What’s not to love about a group of five or so teenage crooners singing us some of the sweetest and catchiest pop songs around?
MTV is in the final rounds of its online “Battle of the Boy Bands” competition to crown the best of the best in terms of the wide-eyed and handsome popster crowd. But here at Young Hollywood, we’ve compiled lists of our favorite boy bands of present day and of years gone by…
Today’s Hottest Boy Bands:
One Direction -- If you haven’t heard of One Direction by now, then you must be living under a rock. A HUGE ROCK. The British Invasion is back, and in a span of only two years, and after placing third in the UK's "X Factor" competition, this band of five British heartthrobs (English boys Liam Payne, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles, and Irishman Niall Horan) has veritably taken over the world. Not to mention the hearts of fans everywhere. Everything we love about boy bands -- good looks, good hair, even better songs and voices, etc. -- is present in One Direction.
The Wanted -- This other group of UK natives is known mostly for their infectious, club-friendly music and devilish good looks. Everyone loves a good bad boy, and you can best believe that there is no shortage of those with TW. Not afraid to speak their minds, this group of lads (comprised of Max George, Siva Kaneswaran, Jay McGuiness, Tom Parker, and Nathan Sykes) will definitely get pop music lovers all over the world dancing. Hear them sound off at the YH Studio!
Jonas Brothers -- Although the JoBros got their start quite a few years ago, no list like this would be complete without them. This New Jersey trio broke the stereotype of what a boy band (emphasis on “band”) should be by actually playing their own instruments and writing their own music. Twenty-somethings now-a-days can blissfully reminisce of their high school days when literally EVERYONE was crazy for the Jonas Brothers. Now, ready to start a new chapter in their careers (equipped with a new logo and everything), get ready to soon hear some new music from Kevin, Joe, and Nick.
The Great Boy Bands of the Past:
N*Sync -- There is one word that comes to mind when people think of N*Sync: Greatness. They were the archetype of what a real boy band is, and this band of singers/dancers/pop music gods served as the starting point to the stellar superstardom that is Justin Timberlake. We’re not the first to admit that we still find ourselves randomly belting out the chorus to “Bye Bye Bye” and “It’s Gonna Be Me.” But who cares? It’s N*Sync!
Backstreet Boys -- Another great of their time, the Backstreet Boys helped define the late-‘90s with their sweet and sensitive music that had people fan-girling at the mere mention of their names. No one doesn’t know the words to “I Want It That Way,” it’s just simply too good to forget. Backstreet Boys are currently on tour with boy band pioneers New Kids on the Block, so it’s not too late to still experience some of that feel-good boy band nostalgia of yesteryear.
Who are your favorite boy bands?
