For me personally, there are 2 weeks in a row during which everything gets taken up a notch. This 2-week span includes both Halloween and my birthday. If you live in L.A., you've probably figured out by now that Halloween is a pretty big deal out here. This is a city full of creative minds, artistic souls, and, it has to be said, lots of good-looking exhibitionists. The people are known for going out to see and be seen, so what better excuse is there than Halloween to be whoever you want to be? In a city of aspiring and established actors, writers, directors, producers, etc, Halloween gives you the chance to cast yourself in any role, play the part, act out a fantasy, or, in some cases, just go incognito.
Here's an inside look at what went down this year:
Halloween kicked off 2 days early with the Disturbia party at Playhouse, our Thursday night spot. The nightclub, brought to you by the guys at Muse Lifestyle Group, went all out with the decorations, transforming it into a dungeon, with everything from guillotines to whips and chains, and, of course, the usual acrobats hanging from the ceiling. My costume that night was a young Hugh Hefner, complete with a Playboy-logo-emblazoned smoking jacket, pajama pants, and a pipe. One thing about Playhouse on Thursday nights is that you never know who is going to drop by and take the stage with an impromptu concert. And more often than not, DJ Vice is in the building.
Next up was Mischief Night on Friday October 30th. Our weekly Friday night party is held at Coco de Ville, but for this occasion we took over Coco as well as restaurant next door, STK, both owned by The One Group.
I went as John Travolta in "Saturday Night Fever", with the white leisure suit, sprayed hair, and—in honor of that night's performer Dirt Nasty (Simon Rex’s alter ego) —the gold chain. With STK’s usual dining area cleared as a dance floor for the night as Clinton Sparks spun, and DJ Eric Cubeechee on the turntables in Coco, the entire space was packed. Dirt Nasty took the stage to perform several of his songs, including "Droppin' Names" and "1980" (for which I lent him my gold chain).
There was also a surprise performance by Jupiter Rising, best known for their single "L.A. Girls". Young Hollywood was out in full force that night with guests including "Vampire Diaries" star Paul Wesley, director Nick Goossen, Josh Hopkins, Shaun Sipos, Justin Chatwin, Carly Pope, Jonathan Bennett, Chris Zylka, Talan Torriero, Ben Feldman, and Jonathan Sadowski (doing his best ‘Edward Cullen’). Also in attendance: Mark Cuban, Mary J. Blige, Taraji P. Henson, and Tyrese. And it still wasn't even Halloween. Yet.
Our weekly Saturday party at MyHouse became MyHauntedHouse on October 31st. I disguised myself as The Mad Hatter, Johnny Depp-style. Tim Burton's "Alice In Wonderland" is set for 2010, but thanks to talented make-up artist Laura Lieffring (who also turned me into Heath Ledger's Joker last year), I got a head start on becoming the character. I expect to see a lot of those next year.
I’m not sure if it had to do with the fact that Saturday was the official Halloween, but the girls at MyHouse were the most *scantily clad* I'd seen all week. No complaints. Think about how hot the girls in L.A. look on a typical Saturday night. Now imagine Halloween…
One big surprise for the crowd was a special performance by Michael Jackson (or at least an impersonator so close to the real thing that we felt like we were in the presence of MJ himself). Everyone surrounded him as he took the dance-floor, accompanied by 4 girls from FlirtDancers dressed as zombies, for a midnight performance of "Thriller". The right song at the right time on Halloween night, and also a pretty cool tribute to an iconic performer we lost this year.
All in all, it was another successful Halloween. But there was no time to waste—or rest—as my birthday was just around the corner... I admittedly make a pretty big deal out of my birthday. Maybe it's something about November 4th, because Diddy was born on the same day and he does too. But why not? You get to celebrate another year of life, and what's really worth celebrating more than that?
This year my birthday fell on a Wednesday, the night of our weekly party at Wonderland, one of the newest spots in Hollywood brought to you by The Dolce Group. It's got a tough door, but it's well worth it once you get inside. The theme is in full effect, from the Queen of Heart playing cards on the windows, to the looking-glass mirrors on the walls, to the mushrooms "growing" out of the ceiling. DJ Savi holds it down in a booth overlooking the tables and he always ensures a good time. The club was packed, reaching capacity early; it was the wildest night I'd seen there yet. Some familiar faces in the crowd included Rihanna, James Blunt, Ja Rule, and Mickey Rourke. To top it off, some friends surprised me with a birthday cake shaped like a director's clapboard.
Perfect choice. As it turns out, Wednesday is still a "school night" in Los Angeles, especially for those with 9-to-5 office jobs (which in Hollywood often means 7am to 9pm, if not later). That's why you should also celebrate your birthday on the weekend. David Judaken and Tony Daly, the owners of MyHouse, arranged an amazing birthday gift for me on Saturday November 7th: A performance by LMFAO. There's nothing like having a great night partying at MyHouse and then suddenly realizing that "Shots Shots Shots" isn’t coming from the DJ's laptop, but from LMFAO live on stage in the center of the dance-floor. The crowd went wild. Literally. I've never seen energy quite like that from a live performance at a nightclub. "Shots Shots Shots" was followed by "I'm in LA, Bitch" and then "La La La (I Feel On Top Of The World)". Appropriately enough, I did feel on top of the world when I joined LMFAO on stage.
One security guard shot me a quizzical look as I jumped up there unannounced. My response? "It's all good. It's my birthday."
