Over the years, it hasn't been uncommon for female artists to write and sing songs that depict themselves as weak individuals. But let's face it: groveling at your man's foot, pleading for faithfulness, or financially supporting him and his friends is entirely played out. Enter Beyonce. Just the simple hook of her latest single, Irreplaceable, has left her fan's voices hoarse and weak, a result of their unstopabble screeching in nightclubs as they belt out the ballad's lyrics, leaving men standing on the sidelines bemused at their enthusiasm. There is more to the song, however, than a catchy hook. The lyrics have touched a nerve in women. Beyonce is using the intensity and range behind her voice to exemplify a new mold for the modern musical diva. For example, To the left, to the lefthas become the mission statement for females to stand up and be stronger. Women are no longer wallowing in the pain and frustration from previous relationships, but instead, moving forward. After filming Dreamgirls, Beyonce used a new burst of creativity to include in the songs within her B'Day album. The emotions felt and strength learned from her character, Deena Jones, seemed to be infused with a brash self-confidence, a herald that the time has come in pop music for women to feel more secure about themselves.Irreplaceableis become the new anthem for this new strength and resolve. Women sing it in the shower, play in the car, request it in the club, buy it as a ring tone and even paste it as an away message.Be on the lookout for more songs from Beyonce's B'Day album, such as Upgrade Uand Listen, that also preach the worth and strength of being a women.Danielle Terrell
