Best Of: Unconventional Big-Screen Romances

I know "˜Jerry McGuire,' "˜The Notebook,' etc. are all quality films; but to me they're basically a two hour sleeping pill.

Like my pics for Best Date Movies and Favorite Holiday Films, I drift to the freak side of things. And so do you, "˜Twilight' fans. I'm glad you're with me; now let's go see a movie!

Twilight: A manic-depressive, a vampire and a werewolf walk into a high school...seriously, I can't think of a better modern example that shows no matter how many contrived elements are mixed in, a love story is a love story.

Pretty Woman: This film took the hooker with a heart of gold and turned it into a present-day fairytale.

Grease: Yah this movie is cheesy as hell, but the message still rings true - love know no barriers. Wall-e: Robot lurve!

Cruel Intentions: Horrible rich brats need love to.

Dirty Dancing: Nobody puts baby in a corner!

Moulin Rouge: One of my favorite movies, so over-the-top and crazy, the scene with Nicole Kidman rolling around on the floor covered in a bear rug still makes me LOL.

Sweet Home Alabama: Sometimes you don't know what you've got until it strikes you with lightening.

There's Something About Mary: Possibly the most comically raunchy love story ever told.

She's The Man: Surprisingly touching! Plus Channing Tatum takes his shirt off a lot.

Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion: Because duh, nothing trumps the love of your BFF.

Overboard: Kate Hudson learned from the best! Mom Goldie Hawn rocks this movie with real-life love Kurt Russell.

Edward Scissorhands: Another one of my all-time faves. Tragic, weird, creepy, beautiful and funny.

50 First Dates: She forgets everything; he has to woo her all over again every day. Like "˜Twilight,' contrived plots only dress up the "two people meet and fall for each other" premise that makes romance what it is. Whacked-out fangs or memory loss just make the story unconventional - and therefore watchable!
