ARTIST TO WATCH: Janet Devlin

It is rare to stumble across a voice that is as powerful as Adele. The Grammy-winning singer manages to encompass the different facets of heartbreak in her voice, her melody a powerful punch to your heart as you hear her long for what could have been. Janet Devlin, an up-and-coming 18-year-old Irish singer/songwriter, manages to encompass multiple emotions in her voice -- from the joy of finding love to the sorrow of letting love go -- and I can’t help but be reminded of Adele when I listen to her. Devlin’s voice is a bit softer than Adele’s, but it is nonetheless just as impactful.

Devlin has currently been working with Grammy and Ivor Novello Award-winning songwriter/producer Eliot Kennedy on her debut album, due out later this year, from which she has already released two tracks: “Wonderful” and “Crown of Thorns.” Rather than sign with a major label, Devlin has decided to initially release her debut through direct-to-fan platform PledgeMusic, where fans can pre-order the album, artwork, tour meet-and-greets, and signed posters.

I enjoyed listening to Devlin’s two premiere tracks, and it was interesting to note the juxtaposition of such different songs, as “Wonderful” encompasses the beginning thrill of romance and “Crown of Thorns” explores the ending of one. I admired Devlin’s unique lyrics, particularly: “I want to let you in / Let me introduce you to my skeleton.” I found this lyric to be surprisingly dark, yet oddly cheerful at the same time.

On Devlin’s YouTube page and Website, you can find a number of songs that Devlin has covered. A few of my favorites included her version of “When We Collide” by Matt Cardle, and her take on “To Make You Feel My Love”, originally done by Bob Dylan/Adele. I have not yet heard a cover of a song that struck me as strongly as Devlin’s “To Make You Feel My Love” in a very long time. Have a box of tissues ready when you listen to it, as there is a high chance tears will flow softly down your cheeks by the end of it.

Keep up with Janet on Twitter and Facebook!
