There seems to be a new revival in hip-hop nowadays, and instead of just the usual flashy, showboating nature of some other artists in the genre, there are truly some rappers who are emotional and real. Kendrick Lamar is one of them.
With his trademark vocals (which are uniquely raspier than most), Lamar grew up in Compton, California, where he was heavily influenced by the likes of some of the biggest hip-hop pioneers such as Tupac Shakur and Dr. Dre, the latter of which he’s had the good fortune to collaborate with.
Having released his debut studio album, 2011’s independent Section.80, Lamar has already worked with some of today’s most acclaimed rappers, including Young Jeezy, Busta Rhymes, Lil Wayne, and Drake.
Unlike most newcomers to the rap game, Lamar raps about more than just expensive cars and tons of money, having a real knack for wordplay and fervor for lyrics about relationships, which is what a lot of his fans love him and his music for.
This year, he released the critically-acclaimed major label release good kid, m.A.A.d city, and has already spawned the hits “Swimming Pools (Drank)”, “The Recipe”, and “Poetic Justice”.
