I first meet Blake while he’s setting up for his show at the world-famous Roxy. He’s thrilled to be playing at this great local venue and Hollywood landmark, here to celebrate the release of his second album, ‘Heartbreak on Vinyl.’
“This is exactly the album I wanted to make,” he tells me. “I gave the record company every song, one track at a time.” His friends and longtime supporters were a part of the entire process, making the songs; writing and playing.
Those bonds seem priority to Blake, who’s quick to point out his fresh haircut and mention that he maintains his multi-color ‘do at his friend’s salon while he’s in town.
Then there’s Blake’s mom. His family flew down from Seattle to be there for the event, and she’s delightfully working the crowd; dancing and talking to people. All the while, she’s beaming with pride. She knows every word to his songs and when I ask her what it’s like to see her son up there, she clasps her hands to her heart and says simply, “It’s great!”
When I later tell Blake about the encounter via Twitter, he tweets back: “My mom is the coolest.”
She has every reason to take such joy in seeing him perform. What he did on stage I’ve never seen another artist do before. Plucking members of the audience on stage, Blake samples each of their voices and then mixes it live as he performs. Somehow it all works into a rad remix!
With all his originality and ability, he says Lady Gaga is what he considers “a true pop superstar right now,” relating when they met in New York. Of course he has many friends in the biz, including former Idol rival Jordin Sparks and newcomer Adam Lambert. Something tells me this beatboxing blond is just getting started, as I could easily see him doing a totally funky duet with any one of them! ‘Heartbreak on Vinyl,’ featuring Blake’s single, Sad Song, is out now.
