Tristan Coopersmith: Perfecting the Art of the Pickup

We may be proud masters of the art of sexting, able to seduce the recipient of our steamy texts into swapping naked pics, but what about when it comes to being able to successfully “pickup” a new guy/girl?  Often our skills go from ten to zero once the anonymity of the screen and the comfort of the delete button are removed. Has living in a tech-obsessed world crippled our ability to hone our real life pickup skills?

Case in point: the pickup line I overheard this weekend: “If you were a booger, I’d pick you first.“ No one in the history of ever, was had at “booger.”

So what is it about a line that is such a turn-off?  A line is not only generic and insincere, but rarely can it engage he/she whose ears it falls upon.  And I’m not just referring to the cheesy pickup lines.  Even lines like, “Haven’t I seen you here before?” or “You must be a (fill in random astrological sign HERE), right?” only require a yes/no response, as opposed to an inspired level of engagement. Also let us not forget the interrogation method: “What brings you here? Who did you come with? Where do you work?” As if he/she hasn’t heard these umpteen times… can I get a pillow with your line of questioning, please?

Brett Gursky: Closing Time

Director Brett Gursky with former boss, director Brett Ratner. For me, The Scene in Los Angeles is defined by two things: The Entertainment Industry and Nightlife. The same goes for my career. I am a writer & a director, and I also throw parties & host events. Earlier this month, I was able to bring both of my worlds together with the premiere of my short film "Closing Time". The screening was held at William Morris Endeavor Entertainment in Beverly Hills, thanks to my agent Mike Esola. The after-party was at Winston's, which was the main location used in the film. We also shot at the famous Canter's Deli on Fairfax Avenue.

"Closing Time" takes place during a night out in L.A. and follows 3 guys who are trying to "pick up chicks". Thanks to text messaging and social networking, the whole game has changed. One of the guys, played by Ben Savage, has just gotten out of a long-term relationship and, now that he's back on the scene for the first time in a while, he must learn the new rules of the game. Film critic Ben Lyons, who attended the premiere, called it "Swingers for the text-messaging generation." He also praised the "West Coast Woody Allen feel of the film." Huge compliment.
