Last night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, the world’s favorite chart-topping superstars rocked the red carpet at the 2012 Billboard Music Awards! Adele was one of the top winners of the night, sweeping the titles for Top Artist, Top Female Artist, Top Hot 100 Artist, Top Pop Artist, and Top Billboard 200 Album, among many others. LMFAO took home the Top Hot 100 Song award for their smash hit, “Party Rock Anthem”, while also receiving the honor of Top Duo/Group. Wiz Khalifa took home the title of Top New Artist, while Lil Wayne won for Top Male Artist. Coldplay was awarded the title of Top Rock Artist, Lady Antebellum took home the award for Top Country Artist, and Chris Brown took home the award for Top R&B Artist.
Undoubtably, one of the biggest highlights of the night saw Jordin Sparks and John Legend pay a powerful tribute to the late and great Whitney Houston, while her daughter Bobbi Kristina and sister-in-law Pat Houston accepted the Billboard Millenium Award on Houston’s behalf. Natasha Bedingfield honored the late disco queen Donna Summers. Justin Bieber tore up the stage with his new single, “Boyfriend”, and Katy Perry made a splash by debuting her new song “Wide Awake”. Perry lowered herself onto the stage by sitting on a suspended sheet that slowly descended from the rafters while two male aerialists swung by her side. Usher made the crowd swoon by performing his single, “Scream”, while surrounded by 20 back-up dancers. The most moving performance of the night goes to Alicia Keys and Stevie Wonder, who performed his hits “Higher Ground” and “Overjoyed”, before wrapping the night up with a stripped-down version of Keys's hit with Jay-Z, “Empire State of Mind”. Finally, Wonder was awarded the Billboard Icon Award, a prestigious honor. Wonder announced that he is currently working on an upcoming album, as well as creating a record label of his own. Other performers included Cee Lo Green and Goodie Mobb, Kelly Clarkson, Linkin Park, Chris Brown, The Wanted, Jason Derulo and the boys of LMFAO, and Carrie Underwood, all of whom gave mind-blowing performances. Check out some highlights below:
As always, the kings and queens of the charts shook up the red carpet. Carrie Underwood looked like a fairy tale princess in a billowing Oscar de La Renta ice grey gown, while Jordin Sparks opted for a more modern look in a simple yet elegant nude lace Diane von Furstenberg dress. Taylor Swift looked stunning as always in a sheer, scarlet floor-length Elie Saab gown, and Katy Perry looked equally as gorgeous in a shimmery lavender backless gown by Blumarine. Miley Cyrus opted to not wear pants this year and instead wore an oversize white Jean Paul Gaultier blazer with a rather plunging neckline. The boys of The Wanted all looked dapper in sleek sophisticated suits, while the boys of LMFAO showed up in their usual over-the-top garb and out-of-control animal print pants.
