Zach Braff's online campaign to raise funds for his new movie project has closed with $3.1 million in donations from 46,000 fans.

The star's crowdsourcing initiative on Kickstarter.com shut down on Friday (24May13) and the star couldn't be happier with the response from fans pledging donations to fund a sequel to his cult film Garden State.

Zach Braff launched the campaign on 24 April (13) and hit his goal of $2 million in just days.

Celebrating on Friday, he tweeted, "Thank you, thank you, thank you. I won't let you down! Lets do this."

Kate Hudson, Jim Parsons, Josh Gad and Mandy Patinkin have been cast in the film, entitled Wish I Was Here.

Earlier this year (13) a similar crowdsourcing initiative, created by filmmaker Rob Thomas, broke Kickstarter.com records after he created an account to raise funds for a movie version of his TV series Veronica Mars. It generated more than $5.5 million in 30 days and became the most-supported project in the fundraising website's history.
