Young Matilda stars to receive special Tony Awards

The four young actresses sharing the lead role in Broadway hit Matilda The Musical are set to receive special prizes at the upcoming Tony Awards.

The Tony Awards Administration Committee has decided to give out Tony Honors for Excellence to Sophia Gennusa, Oona Laurence, Bailey Ryon and Milly Shapiro, who alternate the title part, in recognition of "their outstanding performances this season".

As a result, the youngsters, who are all either nine or 10 years old, will be ineligible to win the Tony Award for lead actress but won't go home empty-handed, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The four Matildas featured in the original musical in London's West End shared the Best Actress prize at Britain's Olivier Awards last year (12), before it opened to rave reviews with a new cast at New York City's Shubert Theater earlier this month (Apr13).

The Tony Award nominations are to be announced on Tuesday (30Apr13) while the winners will be unveiled on 9 June (13).
