Twisted Sister drummer A.J. Pero has died from an apparent heart attack.

The musician, 55, was on tour with rockers Adrenaline Mob, who called for paramedics on Friday morning (20Mar15) when they were unable to wake him on their tour bus.

He was admitted to a hospital in Poughkeepsie, New York, where he was subsequently pronounced dead.

Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider paid tribute to his close pal on Twitter, writing, "My friend, my brother, my band mate passed away today. My heart is broken. RIP A.J. Pero."

The members of Adrenaline Mob also shared their sadness in a post on Facebook, posting: "We write this with tears in our eyes & our hearts broken to pieces.. our beloved brother AJ Pero peacefully passed away in his sleep this morning on the bus. We are in complete shock & our hearts & prayers go out to his family. It has been nothing short of an honor to have shared the stage with such a beautiful soul & legend! We love you AJ, rest in peace."

Born Anthony Jude Pero, the rocker joined Twisted Sister in 1982 and performed with the metal group for four years before leaving. He reunited with the band in 1997 and again in 2001 and 2002, before becoming a permanent member once more in 2003.

He famously featured in the band's 1984 video for We're Not Gonna Take It, in which he hit a snare drum covered with glitter, sending it flying into the air.
