British actor Tom Hardy has placed the future of the upcoming Mad Max reboot in the hands of his fans after confessing he has signed on to make three sequels if the remake is a hit at the box office.

The Dark Knight Rises star takes on the titular anti-hero character made famous by Mel Gibson in the forthcoming Mad Max: Fury Road, and he is hoping he'll be back for more.

Discussing the film with Esquire magazine, Hardy says, "I've never been more excited and out of my comfort zone."

The actor is confident fans will love the movie, branding it "f**ing unbelievable", and urges them to check it out in movie theaters upon its release in May (15) to ensure sequels.

Revealing he's attached to three more Mad Max instalments, he adds, "Everything's based on figures and how things are perceived. Inevitably it's a business."

The release of Mad Max: Fury Road is a long time coming - production was originally scheduled to get underway in 2010, but filming eventually started in 2012 following various delays.

Charlize Theron and Zoe Kravitz also star in Mad Max: Fury Road.
