Studio bosses planning to release Spider-Man movie every year

Sony Picture Entertainment bosses have announced they are planning to expand the Spider-Man franchise by releasing a new film about the superhero every year.

The Amazing Spider-Man starring Andrew Garfield raked in $752 million worldwide in 2012 and studio executives are hoping to cash in on its box office success by bringing more of the web-slinger to the silver screen.

In an interview with Variety, Sony Picture Entertainment co-chairman Amy Pascal reveals, "We are expanding the Spider-Man universe into The Sinister Six and Venom, so that we have Spider-Man movies every year."

Spider-Man producers previously announced that the villain spin-offs will feature Peter Parker's enemies, including Venom, played by Topher Grace in 2007's Spider-Man 3, while another will be an ensemble piece based around The Sinister Six, a group of Spider-Man baddies.

The move follows superhero specialists Marvel Studios, whose cinematic universe has allowed them to release films centered on individual characters on a yearly basis.

The second instalment of The Amazing Spider-Man will hit cinemas in May (14), while The Amazing Spider-Man 3 is scheduled to be released in June, 2016.
