Stars turn out for London's anti-austerity march

Written by . Published: June 20 2015

Celebrities including Michael Sheen and Russell Brand joined 70,000 protesters on a march through London on Saturday (20Jun15) to take a stand against austerity in the U.K.

The actors, along with Welsh singer Charlotte Church, backed the protest to oppose spending cuts proposed by Britain's Conservative government.

A Facebook.com event page, which Brand posted on Twitter.com, reads, "With the Tories (Conservatives) going it alone in government we know exactly what to expect. More nasty, destructive cuts to the things ordinary people care about - the NHS, the welfare state, education and public services. We'll be assembling the demonstration in the heart of the City of London right on the doorstep of the very people who created the crisis in the first place, the banks and their friends in Westminster."

Brand later posted pictures of himself posing with other protesters at the march.

Sheen also took to the microblogging site to publicize the event, writing, "This is the big Austerity demonstration happening in London (on) Saturday," while Church wrote on Facebook, "Hello Facebookers (sic)! Thank you so much for your messages of support! I hope to see many of you at the anti austerity rally today in London! Lots of love...!!!!!!"
