U.S. singer Christina Grimmie has died from her injuries following a shooting incident at a gig in Orlando, Florida on Friday night (10Jun16).

The 22-year-old YouTube sensation, who competed on talent show The Voice in 2014, was signing autographs near a merchandise table after her concert at the Plaza Live Theater with Before You Exit when a man armed with two guns walked up and shot her.

He then shot himself as Grimmie's brother Mark tackled him. "The suspect, who police have not identified, then shot himself. The suspect is dead," police spokeswoman Wanda Miglio confirmed in a press conference.

Grimmie was rushed to the Orlando Regional Medical Center, where she was later pronounced dead.

"It is with a heavy heart that we can confirm that Christina has passed and went home to be with the Lord. She was shot at her show in Orlando, and unfortunately didn't survive the gun shot wounds," her representative told People.com.

"We ask at this time that you respect the privacy of her family and friends in their time of mourning."

A GoFundMe page has been set up to support Grimmie's family, her rep added.

No one else was injured thanks to the actions of Mark Grimmie, who police chiefs are calling a hero. Police are investigating the shocking incident but have no idea why the shooter targeted Grimmie, or if he knew her.

The singer, who hailed from New Jersey, came in third on season six of NBC's singing competition after competing as part of Adam Levine's team.

As news of the shooting broke, the Maroon 5 frontman expressed his sadness and shared a selfie of him with Grimmie on Instagram. "I'm sad, shocked and confused. We love you so much Grimmie. We are all praying hard that you can pull through this... this just isn't fair," he captioned the shot.

Levine has not yet posted again on social media since her death was confirmed.

"There are no words. We lost a beautiful soul with an amazing voice. Our hearts go out to the friends, fans and family of @TheRealGrimmie," The Voice posted on its Twitter account late on Friday.

Blake Shelton also took to social media to express his shock and disbelief. "Just hearing about this.. Is this all true? Anybody know how she's doing?" he wrote on Twitter. Later, he tweeted "Praying."
