Shailene Woodley and Jane Fonda serve Thanksgiving dinner to protesters

Shailene Woodley and Jane Fonda spent their Thanksgiving in solidarity with those protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline on Thursday (24Nov16).

The Divergent star, who has been speaking out against the controversial oil pipeline for months, continued to protest against the project, which they claim will threaten the water and disturb cultural sites in the Standing Rock Indian Reservation in North Dakota, by serving around 500 Thanksgiving meals to demonstrators with the veteran actress on Thursday.

"The one that Jane Fonda is a part of, that meal is being served to the Cannon Ball community as a way of saying thanks for putting up with us," Dallas Goldtooth, a Native American activist, told ABC News.

Around 300 people protested in Manden, North Dakota on Thanksgiving - watched on by around 50 police officers.

It is thought this is the first time Jane, who has supported the cause on social media, has made a personal appearance in the area. Shailene is a frequent visitor who regularly documents her trips on Facebook Live, including the time she was arrested for protesting in October (16).

The actress was close to tears when she spoke to TYT Politics from the area, saying, "It is a day that many call Thanksgiving and it's a day where kids in elementary school in America are taught false narratives about our natives brothers and sisters... none of our children know the truth about not only what happened to Native Americans when westerners decided to colonise the country but what is still happening to Native Americans.

"We're here with these cops, with snipers, with rubber bullets and I'm just sick of it. I'm sick of it. There's no excuse. Where is everyone? Why isn't everyone standing up and saying something?"

Shailene will appear in court on 22 February (17) on charges of criminal trespass and engaging in a riot, to which she has pleaded not guilty.

While they were only stars present on the ground, many showed their support online, including Katy Perry, Orlando Bloom, Mark Ruffalo, Zendaya and Lupita Nyong'o, who encouraged their followers to donate to the cause and promote the hashtags #NoDAPL #StandingRock or #StandWithStandingRock.
