Scarlett Johansson's surprise 21st birthday disaster
Actress Scarlett Johansson has hated surprise parties ever since her family and friends threw her a disastrous 21st birthday bash.
The Avengers star was hoping for a low-key celebration when she turned 21, which is the legal drinking age in America, so instead of celebrating the milestone with a traditional alcohol-fuelled bash, Johansson opted for a quiet night with her family.
Johansson recalled the story to Queen Latifah on her talk show on
Tuesday (01Apr14), explaining, "I don't like jokes, I don't like
surprises. I've had bad experiences. The last time I had something
like that, it was my 21st birthday and I had to get up at 5:30 AM
the next day to work.
"I went out to dinner with my family, we're driving home and my
friend Sarah had a party at a nightclub every Thursday night and my
mum said, 'Oh, you gonna go to your friend's nightclub? It's a
Thursday night.' And I said, 'No way, I gotta get up at 5:30 AM.
She was like, 'You should go, you should go out drinking with your
friends!'
"We got into this huge fight, which ended with my step-father
pushing me out of the car, into a nightclub - I had a bleeding
fingernail from it.
"I knew what awaited me. It was lots of love and presents and I
hated it. I hated every minute of it. I just get so embarrassed. It
was awful. I went into the party, went straight to the bar - drank
like mummy told me to - stayed until 2:00 AM and went to work."
