Scarlett Johansson picked up real hitchhikers for movie role

Scarlett Johansson surprised hitchhikers in Scotland while she was preparing for her role in sci-fi drama Under The Skin.

The Avengers star plays an alien seductress who preys on men, and to get into the role, director Jonathan Glazer suggested Johansson try out some method acting by picking up drifters in Glasgow, where they were filming.

During an interview on Queen Latifah's talk show on Tuesday (01Apr14), she explained, "I had sort of a candid camera/prank moment with everyday people getting in and out of my van.

"The director said to me, 'I have a great idea, I think you should be driving around the streets of Glasgow picking up regular people.' I was like, 'That's a terrible idea.'"

She continued, "I called my agent (crying), 'They're not paying me, it's freezing, I'm supposed to pick up random strangers. There's no craft (food) service!"

However, Johansson went ahead with the experiment and managed to fool people into believing she wasn't a Hollywood A-lister.

She said, "People are very trusting, which is a wonderful thing. I first asked them for directions, of course. Like, 'Where are you headed on this lonely road? It's freezing out there. I can give you a ride, if you like.' That's all it takes. That and a smear of red lipstick and you'd be surprised."
