Rihanna talks customers' 'crazy' connection with Fenty Beauty

Rihanna finds it “crazy” how much people have emotionally connected with her Fenty Beauty range.

The 29-year-old singer unveiled her cosmetics range last month (Sep17), and it’s since become an international phenomenon with its huge variety of options for every skin tone and type.

Discussing the public’s reaction to her line during Vogue’s Forces of Fashion conference on Thursday (12Oct17), Rihanna admitted she’s been surprised by how much it's loved.

“I wanted it to be something that girls love, for it to be respected by professionals, and I wanted to something that felt like me - reflective of make-up I love and I generally want to wear,” she explained to Vogue’s Hamish Bowles at the event. “We have this amazing emotional connection with customers who’ve never been able to find their shade of foundation before - women crying at the (make-up) counter, it’s crazy to even think about. The first woman I saw put make-up on her face was a black woman - my mom - when I think of my customers I want everyone to feel like they can find their color, that they are represented as part of this new generation.”

The Work hitmaker, born Robyn Rihanna Fenty, is also a successful designer thanks to her Fenty x Puma line, the latest collection of which was unveiled during New York Fashion Week in September. She’s fully aware of the pressure on her to deliver as a celebrity designer compared to those who have undergone formal training and made a full career out of creating, and she’s happy to be held accountable for all her ideas.

“What I love the most is when someone who is not a fan of mine walks into a store and loves a piece, loves the product, whether it’s make-up or clothes,” she smiled. “That tells me a lot, it means that you genuinely love what I have to offer - I like when things are respected solely for how great they are.”
