The actor/writer/director said of his win, "I wanted to take this iconic work and introduce it to people who had never heard of it... There is nothing like having nine strong black women holding you up."

Perry also triumphed in the TV categories, with Tyler Perry's House of Payne named Outstanding Comedy Series, and the show's star, David Mann, earning the award for Outstanding Actor in a comedy.

Other prizes went to Vanessa Williams, who was named Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series for her turn in Desperate Housewives, and Sofia Vergara was honored for her performance in Modern Family, while Grey's Anatomy took the Outstanding Drama Series prize.
