Miley Cyrus' homeless fundraising campaign reaches $200,000 in one day
Singer Miley Cyrus has helped to raise $200,000 in just one day for a Los Angeles homeless shelter after highlighting the plight of runaways at the MTV Video Music Awards.
The Wrecking Ball hitmaker sent her 'date' Jesse Helt to accept her Video of the Year award at the annual prizegiving ceremony on Sunday (24Aug14) in Inglewood, California, and he revealed that he was homeless onstage.
At the end of his acceptance speech, Helt directed the public to
Cyrus' Facebook.com page and asked fans to donate to her
fundraising campaign for My Friend's Place.
On Monday (25Aug14), the contributions reached $200,000 and they
are still growing, according to the New York Times.
The campaign will continue until 21 September (14) and people who
donate will be entered into a lottery to meet Cyrus during her
Bangerz tour stop in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on 28 September
(14).
