Margot Robbie: 'I traded my honeymoon for Tonya Harding'

Margot Robbie had a honeymoon on ice when she went to work on new film I, Tonya with her husband right after their wedding.

The Suicide Squad star exchanged vows with Tom Ackerley in Australia just before Christmas, 2016, but the couple had no time to lounge on a beach and celebrate because the newlyweds were producing her new movie together.

Margo plays Tonya Harding, the real-life former bad girl of ice-skating in the film, which revolves around the Olympian's bitter rivalry with Nancy Kerrigan. Tonya was implicated in a plot to disable Nancy and expelled from the U.S. Figure Skating Association.

The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in Canada to rave reviews and a heated bidding war for its U.S. rights on Friday evening (08Sep17). Margot told news show Extra she's more than happy with the film's "specific tone" and "comedy", but adds, "There’s a lot (of) tragedy, the characters are very human."

Meanwhile, the 27-year-old Wolf of Wall Street star admits she didn't know Harding's story was for real when she signed on for the film, explaining she was only four when the Olympics drama went down.

“I was young when it happened, I missed it," she laughed.

But she has certainly immersed herself in the film's story and her role as star and producer ever since - so much so that she seems to have lost track of time.

When asked how her nine-month marriage is going, Margo couldn't believe she'd already been a married woman for so long.

“God, has it been nine months?," she said in disbelief. "It's gone so fast!”

She also admitted that she spent some time during the filming dreaming of the very different kind of honeymoon she and Tom had planned.

"There were times we were sitting in a car parked (on the set) in Atlanta (Georgia) freezing cold being like, 'We should be on a beach right now. We should be on a honeymoon. What are we doing?!' Following our dream.”

But they made up for lost time after wrapping the film.

“We did it (had a proper honeymoon) after we finished shooting. It was great.”

And the newlyweds enjoyed working together so much they have lots more joint projects planned.

“We have 30 films in development and a TV department. The company is growing quickly," she smiled.

They're so busy that there's no time to plan a family quite yet, with Margot stating, "But we have a puppy!"
