Macklemore + Ryan Lewis score six top nods for American Music Awards

Macklemore + Ryan Lewis will be leading the way at the 2013 American Music Awards after landing six top nominations.


The hip-hop duo's hit song Thrift Shop will compete for Single of the Year with Robin Thicke, Pharrell Williams and T.I.'s summer smash Blurred Lines and Florida Georgia Line's Cruise, featuring rapper Nelly, while its album, The Heist, is shortlisted for Favorite Album - Rap/Hip-Hop, going up against Jay Z's Magna Carta... Holy Grail and Kendrick Lamar's good kid, m.A.A.d. city.


Macklemore + Ryan Lewis are also in the running for New Artist of the Year, Favorite Band, Duo or Group - Pop/Rock, and Favorite Artist - Rap/Hip-Hop, while they will vie for the ceremony's biggest honour, Artist of the Year, with Justin Timberlake, Taylor Swift, Rihanna and Bruno Mars.


Timberlake and Swift, who both scored five nods each, will battle it out for the best male and female artist in pop/rock categories, against the likes of Mars, Thicke, Pink and Rihanna.


Meanwhile, the country categories will see Luke Bryan, Hunter Hayes and Blake Shelton fight for the Favorite Male Artist title, and Swift will compete with Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood.


Other nominees include One Direction for Take Me Home (Favorite Album - Pop/Rock), Alicia Keys (Favorite Female Artist - Soul/R+B), Daft Punk and Avicii, who are both shortlisted for Favorite Artist - Electronic Dance Music (EDM).


The nominations were announced on TV by will.i.am and Kelly Clarkson on Thursday (10Oct13), when Miley Cyrus and Imagine Dragons were also unveiled as performers for the prizegiving.


The American Music Awards will take place in Los Angeles on 24 November (13).
