Kelly Clarkson 'kind of bummed' she had to turn down American Idol role

Kelly Clarkson was "kind of bummed" when she was offered a judging role on American Idol after already agreeing to The Voice.

The 35-year-old singer was recently announced to be joining the judging panel for the upcoming season 14 of the talent show. The decision came as a surprise to many, considering Kelly had been rumored to be taking on a position on the reboot of American Idol, the show which started her career, and the star has opened up about the call in an new interview with Entertainment Weekly magazine.

"I want it to be a great experience for my whole family, and that’s what I have to think about at this point in my life," Kelly, who is mother to two children and two stepchildren with husband Brandon Blackstock, explained. "We’re used to the Voice schedule, we already have to work around it because of our family. We have four children - that can be very taxing with a schedule.

"It was just a no-brainer for me with The Voice because of that alone. But my thing is, I was kind of bummed too when Idol came to me. I hope it’s super successful."

Kelly was the first-ever winner of American Idol 15 years ago, and has since enjoyed a long and successful career. However, she believes she can help someone enjoy a similar run in the music industry on any talent show.

"Would it have been awesome to come back to the show that started me and help give someone that start? Yes! But that doesn’t mean I can’t do the same thing on The Voice," she insisted. "That’s my goal. I want to have someone on my team, whether they win or not, to have a successful career after being on the show."
