Kelis almost turned her back on music to become a chef after she signed up for cookery lessons during her hiatus.
The Milkshake star took a break between releasing her 2006 album Kelis Was Here and hitting the studio to start work on her upcoming record Flesh Tone.
She enrolled at a culinary school during her hiatus, and admits she was close to quitting music for good after falling in love with food during her cordon-bleu education.
She tells Britain's Daily Record, "I took four years off to have a little life between this album and my last album. I studied to be a chef as a side thing, a little hobby that I enjoyed doing, but I ended up falling madly in love with the food and the lifestyle.
"I needed a break and going to culinary school turned a lightbulb on that I didn't have to make music. The people in the music business forget that... there is an entire world of people out there who do not care what we do, we are not creating the wheel."
