Keith Urban was in rehab when he won first CMA Male Vocalist prize

Written by . Published: June 08 2014

Singer Keith Urban discovered he had just won Male Vocalist of the Year at the 2006 Country Music Association Awards while he was in rehab battling addictions to drugs and alcohol.

The country star checked in for treatment after his wife Nicole Kidman and some close friends staged an intervention - and while in rehab he tasted the highs and lows of life on the same evening.

He tells Rolling Stone magazine, "I had gone to bed and I remember a guy coming in and saying, 'You just won something. Male vocalist? CMAs or something?' And I was like, 'Really?'

"He said, 'Yeah, off to bed', and shut the door. I just lay there in the dark, going, 'How weird is this?'"
