Justin Bieber's private plane was detained at an airport in New Jersey on Friday (31Jan14) amid suspicion there was marijuana was onboard, according to multiple reports.

The Baby hitmaker flew in from his native Canada to attend the Super Bowl football championship game, which takes place in New Jersey on Sunday (02Feb14), but his travel plans hit a snag after landing at Teterboro Airport.

Customs and Border Protection authorities reportedly smelled a strong odour of marijuana and searched the aircraft with sniffer dogs, but no contraband was found, according to NBC News.

The singer, his father Jeremy Bieber, and a group of friends were subsequently allowed to go on their way.

The news caps off an eventful week for the troubled teen superstar - on Wednesday (29Jan14), he turned himself in to police in Toronto, Canada and was officially charged in connection to an alleged assault on a limousine driver in the city last year (Dec13). He is scheduled to appear in court to face that count on 10 March (14).

Meanwhile, on Thursday (30Jan14), toxicology reports from Bieber's arrest in Miami, Florida last week (ends26Jan14) indicated that the singer had had marijuana and prescription drug Xanax in his system at the time of the incident.

The 19 year old was taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence, resisting arrest without violence and driving with an expired license. He was freed on bail and has since pleaded not guilty to the accusations.

He is due back in court for that case on St. Valentine's Day (14Feb14).
