Actress Jennifer Morrison is leaving Once Upon A Time after six years on the hit U.S. show.

The star made her debut as heroine Emma Swan in the show's pilot episode back in October, 2011, alongside castmates Ginnifer Goodwin, Lana Parrilla and Josh Dallas.

However, Jennifer took to Instagram on Monday morning (08May17) to confirm her magical journey is set to come to an end as she is bowing out of the program, which follows various fairytale characters whose memories were wiped when they were transported into the 'real world'.

Posting a photo of herself, the star told fans she was faced with a "significant decision" as her six-year contract came to an end recently. Although network bosses at ABC and creators Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz invited her to continue as Swan, Jennifer admitted she felt "creatively and personally" that it was time to move on.

"Emma Swan is one my favorite characters that I have ever played," she continued in her caption. "My 6 years on ONCE UPON A TIME has changed my life in the most beautiful ways. I am absolutely blown away by the passion and commitment of the Oncer (sic) fans. I am so honored to have been a central part of such a special show."

Jennifer went on to promise to continue attending fan events and conventions even after she leaves, insisting she'll always enjoy meeting loyal followers of the show. The former House star also noted that if a seventh series was to take place in future, she has already agreed to make a cameo in one episode, while she'll watch the rest as a viewer.

"The creativity of the show runners has always inspired me, and I cannot wait to see the ways that they continue to develop and reinvent the show," she added.

The sixth series' finale is set to air on 14 May (17).
