Idina Menzel supports lesbian Frozen character

Idina Menzel has voiced her support of a fan-made petition for her Frozen character to be a lesbian in the sequel.

Earlier this month (May16), fans of the blockbuster animated film launched a social media campaign using the hashtag "#GiveElsaAGirlfriend", urging Disney bosses to give the film's snow queen Elsa a female love interest.

The potential move would make Elsa the family-friendly film company's first gay character in one of their animated films, and the movement earned a groundswell of support from social media users.

One fan tweeted: "GiveElsaAGirlfriend so little kids will know that girls loving girls is normal even when their parents teach them otherwise," while another user offered: "#GiveElsaAGirlfriend because lgbtq (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) women are just as deserving of love as any other disney character you put on the big screen."

And the campaign has now received the endorsement from Elsa herself, as Idina told Entertainment Tonight at the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday (22May16) that she would be open to her animated alter ego finding love with a woman onscreen.

"I think it's great," Idina said. "Disney's just gotta contend with that. I'll let them figure that out. No matter what, Elsa changed my life."

The actress helped Frozen win one of two Academy Awards in 2014, when her hit track Let It Go won the Best Original Song trophy. The movie also won for Best Animated Feature.

Idina will be back to voice Queen Elsa in Frozen 2, which will also feature the return of Kristen Bell as Princess Anna, and Josh Gad as snowman Olaf. Directors Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, who penned the script for the 2013 hit, are also back on board to helm the follow-up.
