Gina Rodriguez: 'I suffer from anxiety'

Gina Rodriguez suffers from anxiety.

The Jane the Virgin star has opened up about her struggles with the mental health disorder in a new video, in which she poses makeup free and reveals she was anxious about being exposed in the promo - but she is happy with the end result.

"My beautiful friend @antonsoggiu came to visit from Norway and he included me in his magical art," she wrote in a post on Instagram over the weekend (27-28May17). "TEN SECOND PORTRAITS. It's always great to be in front of his lens but this time it was just me. Bare and exposed in the streets of (Los Angeles). No makeup. No styling. Just me."

"I suffer from anxiety," she continues. "And watching this clip I could see how anxious I was but I empathize with myself. I wanted to protect her and tell her it's ok to be anxious, there is nothing different or strange about having anxiety and I will prevail.

"I like watching this video. It makes me uncomfortable but there is a freedom I feel maybe even an acceptance. This is me. Puro (Pure) Gina."

Gina has been candid about her health struggles in the past and in 2014 she revealed she suffers from Hashimoto's disease, which affects the thyroid. Rodriguez was diagnosed with the condition while filming the pilot for her hit show.

"While I was shooting the pilot, I was training for a half marathon and I went to see my holistic doctor right after the marathon was done," she recalled. "She said, 'From your test results, let's talk about your Hashimoto's (disease).' And I was like, 'What are you talking about? I have thyroid disease' and she said, 'No, no you have Hashimoto's and to be honest, I don't know how you're standing right now and why you're not asleep. I thought somebody would be bringing you here'."

"I was like, 'I just ran a half marathon!' She goes, 'Aren't you tired?' and I was like, 'Yeah, but you get up and push forward!' She said, 'Aren't you depressed?' and I said, 'Yeah, but mind over matter'," she added.
