George Lucas museum set for Chicago

Chicago, Illinois officials have won the battle for a George Lucas museum.

City bosses beat out bids from their counterparts in San Francisco and Los Angeles and will now house the movie mogul's impressive collection of Star Wars memorabilia and Hollywood artefacts.

The director/producer will build the $700 million (GBP440 million) Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Chicago, where his wife Mellody Hobson grew up, with a portion of the $4 billion fortune he received from the sale of his Star Wars empire to Disney.

The museum is scheduled to open in 2018 near the city's Soldier Field sports mecca.

A statement from Lucas reads: "Choosing Chicago is the right decision for the museum, but a difficult decision for me personally because of my strong personal and professional roots in the Bay Area."

Lucas had hoped to build the museum in San Francisco, but city officials refused to let him take over a waterfront site he had requested.
