Frances Bean Cobain posted an emotional message to her late father Kurt on Monday (20Feb17), the date of his 50th birthday.

Frances, 24, was less than two years old when her father passed from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in April 1994, aged just 27.

On Instagram Frances, his daughter with Hole rocker Courtney Love, 52, posted a handwritten note which read, "Today would have been your 50th Birthday. You are loved and you are missed. Thank you for giving me The GIFT of Life. Forever your daughter, Frances Bean Cobain."

Posting a link to the Instagram post on her Twitter profile, she added, "February 20th 2017. Happy Birthday."

Kurt's 1994 suicide, which came after struggles with heroin addiction and depression, shocked the world of music.

His band Nirvana were at the height of their popularity, with In Utero, their follow-up to their 1991 smash hit album Nevermind topping America's Billboard Hot 200 chart just months before his death.

Despite being very young at the time of her father's passing, Frances remains protective of her father's legacy.

The visual artist is currently embroiled in a legal dispute with her estranged husband Isaiah Silva over the ownership of a guitar owned by her father, which he claims she gave him as a wedding present.

The left handed Martin D-18E acoustic-electric guitar, thought to be worth millions of dollars as it was the last Kurt played before his death, is reportedly at the center of their divorce proceedings.

According to editors at TMZ.com, last month (Jan17) Frances filed legal documents asking for the instrument to be looked after by a third party, an art shipping company, until they settle the ownership issue.
