Ellen Page expected abuse after coming out

Actress Ellen Page has confessed she expected "much more hate" after 'coming out' as gay in February (14).

The Juno star revealed she is a lesbian during the Human Rights Campaign's Time To THRIVE conference in Las Vegas, and following her admission, Page was ready for a barrage of nasty comments to come her way.

But in the upcoming June issue of Canada's Flare magazine, the 26 year old reveals she was happily proven wrong about her assumption, explaining, "I expected so much more hate. It was just remarkably positive, which is beautiful, because it's indicative of the change that's happening."

Prior to her speech at the Las Vegas event, Page also admits she was "very, very nervous" to speak so openly about her sexuality, knowing she would make headlines moments after the announcement.

She says, "You think you're in a place where you're all, 'I'm thrilled to be gay, I have no issues about being gay anymore, I don't feel shame about being gay,' but you actually do.

"You're just not fully aware of it. I think I still felt scared about people knowing. I felt awkward around gay people; I felt guilty for not being myself."

After the life-changing reveal, Page is now more open than ever about discussing her sexuality, especially since her heterosexual peers don't have to hide theirs from the public eye.

Page adds, "You hear things like, 'People shouldn't know about your life because you're creating an illusion on-screen.' But I don't see other actresses going to great lengths to hide their heterosexuality. That's an unfair double standard."
