Demi Lovato hints at quitting social media after nasty backlash

Written by . Published: June 21 2016

Demi Lovato is contemplating her social media future after angry Mariah Carey fans stormed her accounts with nasty comments over the weekend (18-19Jun16).

The Stone Cold singer courted controversy online when she criticized Mariah for "dissing people", and fans of the pop diva immediately took aim at Demi's Twitter and Instagram accounts, with some users calling her a "b**ch" and a "jealous h**".

And on Monday (20Jun16), Demi responded to her haters, by tweeting, "Damn I gotta quit sayin s**t," and added she might have to take a hiatus from social media for a while.

"Bye Twitter And insta," she wrote. "I like snapchat cause I don't have to see what some of y'all say... But why do people actually give a f**k what I say? That one time I started my own charity providing mental health care for people who can't afford it and this is what y'all talk about. And people wonder what's wrong with the world. Pay more attention to good than bad."

Fan furor began when Demi commented on an Instagram meme comparing Mariah to Ariana Grande, with the caption, “When you order it online vs when it arrives", which suggested the user felt Ariana cannot match up to Mariah.

Demi wrote, "You got it the wrong way around honey," hinting that she preferred Ariana to Mariah, and she later explained her remarks by criticizing Mariah for the way she treats people.

"Mariah is a legend and is so talented but constantly disses people," she wrote in an Instagram comment. "It’s nasty the way she treats Jennifer (Lopez). Ari (Ariana) did nothing wrong."

Mariah famously told the paparazzi, “I don’t know her," when asked about Demi's pal Jennifer in the early 2000s and they have both been asked about a rumored spat ever since. The Booty singer recently told host Wendy Williams, "(Mariah) is forgetful I guess! We've met many times."

In May (16), Mariah told Andy Cohen on U.S. chat show Watch What Happens Live, “That was so long ago, I can’t believe people still make such a big deal about it," but she still continued to insist she doesn't know Jennifer when asked if she thought the singer/actress was cool.

"I don’t know her, what am I supposed to say?," she explained. "I’m not going to put on a thing, ‘Oh, we’re all Hollywood, let’s all just pretend we’re best friends because we’re in that land.’”

She clarified she is aware of who Jennifer is but they have never had a conversation beyond a quick introduction.
