Demi Lovato criticizes Taylor Swift for 'tearing' down Katy Perry
Demi Lovato has blasted Taylor Swift for "tearing" down Katy Perry in her song Bad Blood while simultaneously promoting women's empowerment.
The Cool for the Summer star seemingly took aim at Taylor on social media in February (16) after Taylor gave pop star Kesha money to help her fight a legal battle against producer Dr. Luke, and Demi responded by tweeting she was ready for "self-proclaimed feminists" to take action and speak up about women's rights.
Speaking on their supposed feud to Glamour magazine, Demi stood by
her comments, insisting some stars should be doing more if they
project a feminist or female empowerment image.
“Talking about it at all is doing the work. And I think every woman
does her part in some way," she said. "But I think in certain
situations, certain people could be doing more if they’re going to
claim that as part of their brand."
She also referenced Taylor's song Bad Blood, which is reportedly
about her rift with Katy Perry, adding, “And I think that having a
song and a video about tearing Katy Perry down, that’s not women’s
empowerment. We all do things that aren’t, but I have to ask
myself, 'Am I content with calling myself a feminist?' Yes, because
I speak out.”
Back in February (16), Demi wrote on Twitter, "Take something to
Capitol Hill or actually speak out about something and then I'll be
impressed," after Taylor gave Kesha $250,000 to help her pursue her
sexual and emotional abuse claims against Dr. Luke.
She continued her criticism by mentioning Taylor's squad, which
features stars such as Cara Delevingne, model Gigi Hadid and Selena
Gomez, and how they promote a "false image" of what women should
look like.
Demi prefaced this comment by saying, "This will probably get me in
trouble," but after her interview hit headlines on Tuesday
(04Oct16) she remained defiant, tweeting, "I get asked questions. I
answer them. Sue me."
