David Beckham launches Miami soccer team
British sports icon David Beckham confirmed his role as the owner of a new soccer team on Wednesday (05Feb14) by launching his latest venture in Miami, Florida.
The former England player retired from the game last year (13) after leaving Los Angeles Galaxy and finishing his time on the pitch in a brief stint with French side Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).
He has now confirmed he is returning to the soccer scene by
creating his own Major League Soccer (MLS) team with his business
partner Simon Fuller.
Speaking at a press conference in Miami on Wednesday, Beckham
revealed, "I wanted to create a team that we can start from
scratch... I want to create a team that's very personal... This one
is a big decision but a very personal one. I want to make it my own
team.
"I have great partners... We are very excited about this. Miami is
a vibrant city, it's a city with a lot of passion. I know this city
is ready for football, for soccer, this time around. I know this is
going to be successful... To be successful you have to work hard...
I am going to work hard for this city and for this team."
Beckham also hinted that he will be moving to Miami with his
fashion designer wife Victoria and their four children, adding, "I
am looking forward to spending more time here, my family being
here, my children."
The Beckhams moved back to their native Britain after the soccer
ace left Los Angeles Galaxy.
