Teenage actress Dakota Fanning wsa overjoyed to have turned 18 this year (12) - because it meant she could vote in the all-important election on Tuesday (06Nov12).

The I Am Sam star reached the milestone on 23 February (12), and she exercised her right as an American to head to the polls as incumbent President Barack Obama took on Republican rival Mitt Romney.

She tells Britain's InStyle magazine, "I can do my part to choose the President of the United States. I mean, even if that was the only responsibility that came with being 18, that's huge. That's why I was excited to be 18, personally, so I can choose, you know, what I believe in."

However, Fanning wasn't prepared to reveal her presidential pick, adding: "I try to stay out of politics in my public life, because I think it's something that causes conflict."

Obama has won four more years in the White House.
