Christina Grimmie's family disappointed over Teen Choice tribute snub - report

Written by . Published: August 01 2016

Christina Grimmie's family is reportedly disappointed she wasn't included in a tribute segment during the Teen Choice Awards on Sunday (31Jul16).

The former The Voice finalist was shot and killed by 27-year-old Kevin Loibl at a post-concert meet and greet in Orlando, Florida on 10 June (16), when the deranged fan then took his own life.

At the weekend prizegiving, Jessica Alba introduced a group of people affected by gun violence to the stage, including the son of Alton Sterling, who was shot dead by police in Louisiana last month (Jul16), and victims of the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, a tragedy which occurred just two days after Grimmie was murdered.

Christina was posthumously feted with the Choice Web Star: Music accolade at the Teen Choice Awards, but the category was not televised and she was not mentioned during the broadcast, which reportedly upset her relatives.

"While we are glad that Christina finally won her much deserved Teen Choice Award, we are also definitely disappointed that her name was not mentioned at any point during the two-hour broadcast," a family source tells Entertainment Tonight. "It seems they could have paid honour or tribute to her in some way and that opportunity was missed. The fans have a right to be upset."

Christina's fans vented their frustrations about the exclusion on social media after the ceremony, and also accused awards show bosses of exploiting her death for ratings by including her among the nominees.

"#TeenChoice used Christina Grimmie's death to get views for their award show yet they didnt (sic) mention her once," one fan wrote. "She deserves better than that."

"So the TCA's essentially nominated Christina Grimmie after her death for promo and never even mentioned her name on air?," another fan added. "Gross & corrupt".

Representatives for the Teen Choice Awards have yet to respond to the backlash.
