Charlie Puth and Luke Bryan lined up for American Idol judging spots - report

Charlie Puth and Luke Bryan are reportedly in line for judging spots on the revamped American Idol.

The program is being revived by TV network ABC, with Katy Perry already confirmed as one of the judges and Ryan Seacrest returning as host.

And now it has been claimed that See You Again star Charlie has joined Lionel Richie as a frontrunner for the final two positions on the panel.

If Lionel or Charlie can't commit to the show, bosses apparently have some other options lined up - country singer Luke being one of them after "impressing producers" in early discussions, according to TMZ.com.

Keith Urban, who was a judge on the final four seasons of the show, could also "slide in as an alternate", a source added.

The outlet added that a final decision will be made this week (beg24Jul17), after show producers and ABC representatives conclude their discussions.

Meanwhile, Variety reported that show bosses are also considering potentially having four judges on the panel rather than the traditional three. Only seasons eight, nine and 12 had four judges, but shows like Britain's The X Factor have enjoyed success with four famous faces on the panel.

Ryan only recently confirmed that he'd be back as presenter of the show, revealing he had decided to take on the gig despite his other job hosting Live with Kelly and Ryan.

"It's genuinely hard to put into words what American Idol means to me," he said in a statement. "I'm so grateful for the show and all the career and life opportunities it's allowed me to experience. It's been an incredible journey from day one. To be asked to return this year, at my new home at Disney/ABC, is an honor, if not a bit surreal."
