Channing Tatum and his wife Jenna Dewan-Tatum are set to executive produce a new Step Up television series.

The 36-year-old actor and his spouse met on the set of the 2006 dance movie, which tells the story of a couple who pair up for a dance showcase. Now the tale, which spawned a further four sequels, is going to be turned into a series for YouTube's subscription streaming service, YouTube Red.

The company announced the news at the Vidcon conference in Anaheim, California, on Thursday (23Jun16), and revealed that Channing, Jenna and Adam Shankman, Jennifer Gibgot and Meredith Milton - the five films' original executive producers - will act in that capacity on the series too.

"After five exciting and successful movies, we’re proud to partner with YouTube Red, a major new force on the programming landscape, to adapt the films into an adrenaline-filled original drama series driven by its non-stop energy, spectacular dancing and A-list creative talent," Lionsgate Television Group chairman Kevin Beggs said in a statement.

The series is expected to premiere in 2017.
