Cannes Film Festival tribute planned for Prince

The organizers of the Cannes Film Festival in France are planning to stage a tribute to Prince following the music icon's death on Thursday (21Apr16).

It is not known exactly how the singer will be remembered at this year's festival, which begins on 11 May (16), but as well as appearing in the films Purple Rain and Under the Cherry Moon in the mid-1980s, Prince also provided the soundtrack for Spike Lee's Girl 6, which screened in Cannes' Un Certain Regard section in 1996. He also composed the music for Tim Burton's 1989 Batman film.

"There will be a tribute to Prince, but (we have) no more information right now," a Cannes representative told The Hollywood Reporter.

Prince won a Best Score Oscar for 1984's Purple Rain.

There was another major tribute to Prince in France on Thursday night (21Apr16), hours after he was found dead at his home near Minneapolis, when Paris city officials bathed the Eiffel Tower in purple lights to honor the late music icon.
