BJORK LAUNCHES KARAOKE MARATHON

Icelandic pop star Bjork launched a massive three-day karaoke marathon in her native country on Thursday (06Jan11) to raise awareness of environmental issues.

The singer has joined a campaign to stop a Canadian takeover of Iceland's energy company HS Orka, insisting the country's natural resources should remain under Icelandic control.

Bjork is backing a petition for a referendum to decide whether the country's natural resources should be publicly owned, and she hopes to gather another 15,000 signatures during the three-day karaoke contest.

She says, "Anyone will be allowed to sing. And we intend to sing our resources back."

The It's Oh So Quiet hitmaker kicked off the event on Thursday by duetting with a well-known local journalist.
