Beauty And The Beast and hit Netflix series Stranger Things were given top prizes at the MTV Movie & TV awards on Sunday (07May17).

The ceremony, hosted by Pitch Perfect star Adam Devine, aired live from Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium and honored some of the biggest names in TV and film.

Emma Watson picked up the award for Best Actor in a Movie for the live action adaptation of the Disney Musical and in a passionate acceptance speech, she noted the universal message her character Belle had to offer.

"I think I am being given this award because of who Belle is and what she represents," the actress said.

Beauty and the Beast also took home one the night's major awards, Movie of the Year.

The box office smash Get Out, which was up for golden popcorn statues, received Best Comedic Performance for Lil Rel Howery and the Next Generation Award for rising star Daniel Kaluuya.

Best Picture Oscar winner Moonlight did not go unrecognized, with the stars of the drama, Ashton Sanders and Jharrel Jerome, dominating the Best Kiss category. The actors used their acceptance speech to discuss the cultural and racial barriers the acclaimed drama tackles.

"It is OK for us young performers, especially us minority performers to step outside the box." Jerome said, while his co-star added the award was about more than a kiss.

"This represents the misfits," Sanders said.

Taraji P. Henson also used her time onstage to make a bold statement - the actress accepted the Best Fight Against the System award on behalf of the team behind her film Hidden Figures, and noted that the story, about a group of African American NASA engineers in the 1960s, went untold for too long.

"This movie is bigger than all of us," Henson said.

This year marked the first time awards were handed out for TV shows during the ceremony and several small screen hits were recognized during the telecast. The Netflix science fiction series Stranger Things, which was up for four awards, landed prizes for Millie Bobby Brown (Best Actor in a Show) and Show of the Year, and the groundbreaking family comedy Black-ish received the new Best American Story award.

The night also featured performances from Noah Cyrus, who belted out her new single Stay Together, and Big Sean, who performed his track Jump Out the Window. Another exciting moment included the first live TV performance of Pitbull, J Balvin, and Camila Cabello's hit collaboration Hey Ma, which appears on the soundtrack to the latest Fast & Furious movie, The Fate of the Furious.

It was a big night for the franchise, as the action films scored the coveted Generation Award.

While accepting the award, Vin Diesel, who was joined onstage by co-stars Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster and Tyrese Gibson, thanked the devoted fans of the series.

"I got to thank a generation that was willing to accept this multicultural franchise." Diesel said.
