Ashton Kutcher struggled to control his emotions on TV on Thursday night (14Apr11) after hearing a young woman's story about her sexual abuse as a teenager.
The actor and his wife Demi Moore were guests on Piers Morgan Tonight to talk about their Demi and Ashton (DNA) Foundation, which aims to stop human trafficking and slavery.
During the chat, host Piers Morgan spoke to an unidentified female on the phone about her experiences as a sex slave. The young woman, now 17, detailed how she fell pregnant at the age of "around 14, 15" but lost the baby after her abuser attacked her.
Moore and her partner looked horrified at the story, and Kutcher had to take a moment to compose himself before responding.
He said, "It's the same story, there are often different variables. The trafficker, the slave owner, that's doing this, pimping this girl - this guy, we can all go, 'That's not a good person'... but the guy that's buying this girl... for him to want to sell that girl, he had to be making money. Some guy went and bought that girl.
"Maybe she looked a little young, but he didn't bother to ask. He didn't bother to help. Any one of those guys could have stopped it. Who's the guy going out to do that? That guy on average is 30 years old, he's married, he has no criminal record because there's an assumption in society... of guys going, 'It's not that big a deal'. That's got to stop. Those are the guys that have to stand up and say, 'No, real men don't buy girls'."
And Moore is calling for a change in the law so young girls do not continue to fall victim to traffickers.
She adds, "One of the things I hear and think about - why do we have young girls in this position in the first place? The risk is very low for the buyers and sellers."
