Actor Anthony Anderson impersonated Sam Smith as he accepted the British soul singer's prize for Best New Artist at the 2015 BET Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday (28Jun15).

The Stay With Me hitmaker was unable to attend the network's annual prizegiving, which celebrates the best music and movies by African-Americans and other minorities over the past year.

The Brit beat out the likes of rappers Dej Loaf, Fetty Wap, Rae Sremmurd and R&B singer Tinashe for the prize, and audience members were stunned to see Anderson, who emceed the event, appear from the crowd in a sharp suit and brown wig similar to Smith's hairstyle.

Anderson said, "Sam Smith isn't here tonight because he's white and he didn't think he would win at the BET Awards. And he didn't think he could win, but we showed him that we love him too."

The actor then changed the lyrics to Smith's hit song Stay With Me, and sang, "This award is going to Stay With Me - for you not showing up to BET. Although this trophy is really yours, it's going to stay with me."

He continued, "Sam Smith, congratulations on this much deserved (win). You can come by my house next week and pick it up - but call first because black folks don't just be showing up to people's house like that (sic)."
