Angelina Jolie made a surprise visit to Lebanon to meet with Syrian refugees on Monday (24Feb14).

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Goodwill Ambassador visited the region to speak with Lebanese Prime Minister Tammam Salam and raise awareness about the plight of Syrians who have been displaced because of their country's civil war. Jolie also met with several orphaned children from the country.

A statement from the Salt star reads, "Meeting these children was a heart-rending experience. They have lost their families and their childhood has been hijacked by war. They are so young, yet they are bearing the burdens of their reality as if they are adults...

"The generosity and solidarity shown by Lebanon and (the) Lebanese to its neighbor serves as an example to the world for which we should all be grateful. We all need to help them bear this burden."

Jolie was named a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador in 2001.
